Workshop Descriptions for Kids Summer Creativity Workshops
Workshops are designed to assist kids to explore their artistic voice through working with art materials, tools and ideas.
Bedroom Murals (Drawing/Painting)
Transform your bedroom with a walkway into another world. Will it be a palace ballroom, a mystical forest, a sea of sailing ships, or a galaxy with black holes and shooting stars? Learn to prime your canvas, draw and paint to create this imaginative backdrop.
Big Bad Birds (Sculpture/Painting)
Be inspired by the world of winged creatures. Fashion a clay bird. Draw and paint winged animals. Make a mobile that stretches out and soars high above your head. Become a bird and decorate wings of your own.
Building Big (Assemblage/Painting)
Co-create towers, igloos, cabins or castles. Kids will design and man construction of this architectural wonder. Once erected, they will bring life to their fantasyland with paint and décor.
Friendly Critters (Crafts/Assemblage)
Touch and hold small creatures of our natural world. Marvel at red wigglers, mealworms, crickets, newts and toads. Learn about their worlds; what do they eat and where do they live? Scavenger outside for critters and build them a home.
Fantastic Fridays (Open to ages 4 on up)
These are half-day workshops open to all ages. Each workshop will have a playful creative activity designed around a specific theme.
Gills, Scales and Tails (Printmaking/Painting/Sculpture)
Dive deep into the wonders of the sea through exploring fish. How do they feel? Make prints from real fish, sculpt a clay relief of a fish, listen to stories about fish, draw and paint pictures of the sea.
Imagine a World (Drawing/Painting)
Go beyond what you know is real and create a painting from your imagination. Be inspired by such authors as David Weisner and Sarah Thomson (Imagine a Day). Draw your ideas from the "what ifs" of illusions and dreams. Explore color mixing and basic painting techniques to create your fun-filled paintings.
Know your Ark (Sculpture/Crafts)
Fashion a raft or a big-barreled boat. Test the waters and see if it floats. Create your passengers; are they tall, small, skinny or fat? Who will be chosen to come aboard? Will they fit in your boat or will it capsize or burst at the sides?
Mad Tea Party (Ceramics/Crafts)
Descend the rabbit hole as yourself or in disguise: as a dragon, a cat or a fairy. Join in on the fun of designing this gala event. Make your own clay cups and plates to be fired and used at the party. Learn to serve your guests, pour from a teapot and make the party decor. Last day we will host this festive event.
Magic Mud (Sculpture/Ceramics)
Explore the versatilities of clay. Try your hand at what artists do with clay to create their art. Throw on a potter's wheel, design and craft a tile, and learn to model a 3-D sculpture.
Marble Mania (Sculpture/Assemblage)
Be the engineer and the sculptor. Cut, paste and glue the tracks with construction materials, to build a floor model roller coaster. Create a track filled with wild curves and winding stretches while trying to keep your ball on the fast track.
Myths of Olympia (Painting/Collage)
Be introduced to the gods and goddesses of Greece. Visit Mount Olympus and the underworld. Meet Cyclops, Medusa and the Ash Tree Nymphs. Hear about the fantastic adventures of this world so you can make a story of your own. Draw paint and collage a shadow box to create a world of mystery and magic.
Novel Cartoons (Drawing/Book Making)
Be inspired by the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and make your own journal telling your story of the adventures of a fictitious character. Create a book. Learn and make stylized images, embellish them with color to bring them to life.
Portraits of my Bedfellows (Drawing/Painting)
Paint a picture of your Teddy Bears, bunnies or pets if you prefer. Color mix sponge drizzle, and brush your way to bring their personalities to life. Explore using bright colors and big shapes on a variety of large 2-d surfaces.
Puppets-In and out of the Box (Sculpture/Painting)
Be the play write and the puppeteer. Listen to such classic stories as: The Princess and the Pea, Babar, and Tortoise and the Hare. Create different puppets and bring to life a story of your own. Become a puppet and make yourself into a life-sized Jack or Jill in a box.
Recycled Robots (Assemblage)
Create your own mechanical creature. Discover how objects change when used for another purpose. What will animate your robot? Problem-solve your way to connect a variety of shapes and forms. Learn how to safely use basic hand tools.
Simple Games (Assemblage/Painting)
Learn to make and play games from all over the world. Play knucklebones; a game from ancient Greece, make blocks for Kubbs; a toss game invented by the Vikings. Make and decorate board games, create variations of hopscotch, marble games and more.
Towering Castles (Sculpture/Painting)
Be inspired by the architecture of the Middle Ages. Learn and explore the castles parts: moats, towering spires, drawbridges, the castle keep and the courtyard. Sculpt a walled city in sand in a far off land. Design and create a painting with raised shapes showing the front of your fortress.
